Rules.

  1. The Cavils to be drawn four times a year; each quarter to consist of twelve and fourteen weeks alternately.
  2. Each flat be cavilled separately.
  3. A set of hewers to consist four men.
  4. Every hewer to have a cavil in either singly or in sets, two men to claim a cavil.
  5. If it be found necessary to reduce the number at any flat, the last cavil to shift first in all cases.
  6. Should any man's place be stopped owing to the said place being too far in advance, or for any other reason, and should there be any men working at that flat who were not cavilled there at that time, these men to shift from the flat first, providing there is not a place found at the same flat for those men who were cavilled there. But should the above mentioned place go on again during the quarter then the men that were cavilled there go back to it again.
  7. Should any men take a bargain during the quarter, they must remain fourteen days in such bargain before they forfeit their cavil, after which time should the said bargain be stopped, or finish before the expiration of the quarter, these men to go where directed by the overman.
  8. Should a flat be all whole, and pillar working commence during the quarter, the first cavils at that flat to claim the pillar working first.
  9. In the whole working a set of men to be cavilled to two boards next to each other so that marrows may be as near to each other as possible, but if required to go double the men belonging to the board to go to the one nearest the mothergate. Should however, the boards have to be singled again during the same quarter, these men to return to their original places.
  10. In broken workings where all the pillar is being taken out from one headways, and two sets or more are cavilled to that headways, the first cavil to claim the left side in all cases, and the headway's coal to head these cavils, but in working half pillars off all boardways with two or more sets in the same headways the first cavil to claim the goaf side, and the last cavil being first to shift should one cavil be done before the other. Should, however, the two sets finish there cavils on the same day; they are to put in cavils on the same day, they are to put in cavils for which pillar they are to have.
