I remember watching the TV. coverage of this disaster, I could hardly believe such a terrible thing was happening, I felt extremely helpless and shocked. I cannot even begin to understand how the villagers felt or how they managed to carry on with their immediate tasks. Even to this day I can remember seeing the waste moving downhill, I can see the rescuers trying to reach the children and teachers, they formed a line and passed the bits of waste back away from the rescue area. You may not believe this but the people of Aberfan were coerced into paying £150,000 for the removal of the tip which remained. It was not until 1997 that this money was repaid by the Welsh Office.
