Miner Boy.
There's an Island called Cape Breton off the Nova Scotia shore
They've been mining coal there for three hundred years or more
In a mining town called Glace Bay a baby boy was born
To a miner and his new Bride in 1934
Daddy was a miner down in the 1b pit
He worked at the coal face loading up the trips
His shift was working underground when Momma heard the whistle blow
And in her heart she knew that he'd be coming home no more
She held their baby in her arms as tears rolled down her cheeks
She whispered softly in his ear the only words that she could speak
She said don't be a miner oh my boy, find something else to do
That coal mine took your Daddy, I can't bear to lose you too
You'll just find pain and heartache down in the deep dark pit
Don't be a miner oh my boy,
You just turn your back on it
They struggled through the years, her boy grew big and strong
At 17 he told his Mamma all about his plans
He had to be a miner boy,
He had to understand
Walk in his Daddy's footsteps and mine the coal by hand
She said don't be a miner oh my boy, find something else to do
That coal mine took your Daddy, I can't bear to lose you too
You'll just find pain and heartache down in the deep dark pit
Don't be a miner oh my boy,
You just turn your back on it
One day while he was working the roof cracked and caved in
This time the mine would spare his life
But would it be so kind again
As he stumbled to his feet he heard a whisper in his ear,
It was his Daddy's voice making things so clear
He said don't be miner oh my boy, find something else to do
This coal mine took me away from your Mom and you
You'll just find pain and heartache down in the deep dark mines
Don't be a miner oh my boy
Don't let it take you too
